“Diabolic: Romeo and Juliet” Theater Performance Review

Hajar Saeedi Nejad

The play is written by Mohammad Charmshir and directed by Atila Pesyani. It’s an adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy. The question is if the writer has created new events through signs and narrating his own text. What we see in Charmshir’s play during performing is not pleasant. The political-historical structure which represents power in original text is diminishing to a shallow situation in Charmshir’s play. Metaphorical structure of Shakespeare’s text, sarcastic language, and meticulous characterization are all changed to melodrama play. The city is changed to a narrow street and complicated structure of power which is diminished to an unattractive fighting between man and a woman. The metaphorical, historical and complicated concept of fate, power domination on human which condemned two lovers to death; is presented in the request of two families for omitting them in new text. This kind of adaptation is not a problem as it shouldn’t but this new text is empty from all Shakespeare’s sign. What is the strategy behind the plot. The process of this simplification, to weaken the characters to unattractive stereotype, and etc…has changed the original text to a gangster TV shows. What is the idea of making the thought provoking dramatic text to a simple, flat one? The same question also works for performing of it, the performing of Mr.Pesyani is completely anti-political. He has depoliticized from crisis elements. Actors are the representative of simple stereotypes. For example, Juliet is defined as a Femme Fatale, Montague’s wife in a hegemonic type is reproducing the violent aspect of patriarchy. Romeo is like a young dealer, moody and stubborn. This depoliticization doesn’t only work for performing it has effect on concept, too. Now we should ask what diabolic? These lovers are now changed to popular heroes of TV series. All these process is trying to change a middle class audience to a person who doesn’t have critical view and is seeking desires and his eyes are closed because of the big wheels of capitalism.
