“Harvey” Theater performance Review

Erfan Khalaghi

Harvey is a play written by Mary Chase and directed by Melodi Armnia

The play is among Youth Theatre Competition plays.

Broadway theatre in the USA and NewYork city is the same as Hollywood cinema. Theatre production based on theatres’ companies which is not only the reflection of genres in different periods of contemporary history of America but also is the reflection of political and social events. Harvey play which is performed in Iranshahr Theatre, Nazerzadeh Hall is also stemmed from that traditions and theatre movement. The play is about an imaginary strange creature called Harvey that in the form of invisible rabbit and 40 years old man called Elwood has impact on some of the people around them. Harvey character comes from Irish fairytales and it’s because of the origin of its writer. An intelligent and seductive creature which only appears for those whom believe in it and the best are fans of Alcohol and hallucination. Elwood is a hedonist and an alcoholic, a sociable man. He never cares for life’s obstacles and with imaginary Harvey is successful to find accompany of all people that like his ideas to break an organized, typical life. Melodi Armnia is successful in performing this text. Whatever happens on stage is what we expect from a well-made American play consisting beginning, middle and ending. The actors especially Kazem Sayahi and Masoomeh Rahmani play beautifully and friendly. The stage, costumes and music make us to be attracted and create happy moments. Everything is prepared but the performance has a lack. And maybe it backs to the relation of this dramatic text with the world around the director and audience.

Harvey has been written and performed in the middle of 1940s and it has been produced for many times as a movie, theatre or TV play. And people welcomed it. American society had passed war and before that economic downterm of 1930’s effect was still on American’s citizens. At that time cinema, Theatre and TV tried to decrease the effect of war. Middle-class people need not to think about war. Now the main question is what is the reaction of our Iranian’s audience? If using cell phone and Internet in performance can bring connection with the life of audience at present time? These types of questions one more time can show us the nesseccities of selecting dramatic text.
