"Blass" Theater Performance Review

Hossein Memari

Blass is written and directed by Boukje Schweigman from Netherlands, International Competition

This is an acceptable kind of performance art which was started around 1919 in Bauhaus art school by Walter Gropious and Rudolf. Its aim was to unite all types of visual arts to achieve performing movements without dialogue and to find a worldwide language to communicate. It’s a kind of Esperanto for body and movement. Before starting the performance the director explained exactly like children’s game and his role is to act as a leader who introduced the rules of game. For example, if somebody feels dizzy should not participate. To put cell phones and extra clothes in a big box and to cover your shoes with a cover made of plastic. The audiences sat on the white benches in front of stage. Light and effective music is playing and a white balloon becomes bigger and bigger slowly and is flying to different parts and flies high. Suddenly at the upstage is formed as fear. (admirable mime) some of the audiences are murmuring to their next person: look! It’s frightened. The white balloon escapes. It becomes closer and closer to audiences. And they react and touch it. They try to get rid of it. And after a few minutes they are swallowed by such an evil like it. A performer comes out of the white balloon and has a look at the crowd and the first person who invites is me. Then others come into white balloon and stay wherever they like. What we have seen from outside is now experienced by us as we are inside.  For moments we experience darkness and silence and after a few minutes it is done. It’s like birth and death and rebirth, an amazing custom. One of the main reasons for developing Art performance is because it is related to social and common custom in different cultures of the world. The usage of this art is connected to these customs. The artist in this kind of performance has created a plasmatic atmosphere which through it he can make the audience to face an event with different understanding. Performance art is a post- modern movement; it’s a kind of sharing all arts, styles, nations. These artists perform simple daily activities in an atmosphere of plasmatic customs and rituals. They try to make audiences amazed. In this approach audiences are amazed because of choosing simplicity in verbal signs by artist. This type of performing is not based on classic method of story telling and represents image or an abstract concept by every individual and it makes different stories. Basically the performance is based on accident. Form is made by certain structure but the center is accident and hesitancy. In other words, to live at the moment is so important. Let see how visual, audible, performing and folklore elements of daily life are combined together and formed this artistic structure.

  1. The director talks with audiences before the performance and it makes them to take it serious and be active during the play.
  2. The audience is involved emotionally rather than logically during the performance.
  3. To stimulate audience senses and it leads to catharsis of a ritual performance.
  4. The audience is a part of performance.
  5. The audience leaves the performance with sweet smile and says goodbye to this white balloon which is a symbol of pure nature of human and they understand to walk in this pure atmosphere needs the purity of soul and body.
